Poetry - Empty Shell

If I become an empty shell
That is the end of me
No decisions I can make
No future as far as I can see

I must hold steadfast to myself
I can never turn a pawn
An empty, hardened shell of hate
One small crack, and all is gone

Hi,
I came across your blog while searching for something else and I just had to leave a comment! This poem is really interesting- I've thought a lot about that idea of being an empty shell and I realized that when we are full of just ourselves- hate, selfishness, pride- whatever it is, we can never have a good impact on the world. I have to empty myself of all my selfishness in order to be filled with love and joy.
Okay- sorry for such a looooong comment, but I hope you think a little bit about it.

While that is true, my largest problem was always that I was too eager to help everyone, to the point where I was becoming nothing more than a doormat to the people who were full of themselves. That's just as unhealthy, and leads to quite a few unsavory side effects that require years to iron out. (I'm still working on it, but I'm much better).

Never did I say you have to be full of yourself - you just have to be full of something worthwhile. Wonder at the beauty in the world is a good start, and leads to great places and a large collection of "inner peace".

An "empty shell" is a lost soul who doesn't know who they are, or where they belong in the world... From what I've seen, those are the people more prone to be full of selfishness and hate and spiteful pride. People tend project their own views and perceptions of the world upon others, and expect them to behave the way they themselves would behave. Those who do not know who they are tend to believe the world is laughing at them, and tend towards one of two extremes: self-hate, or narcissism. Narcissism leads to selfishness ("Nobody else cares about me, so I'm only going to care about me"), while self-hate leads to being a doormat to the world, and if not stopped, depression can set in.

The only way to be healthy is to find the good things to hold inside as the core of your existence.
